About the event

The Little School of the 400 in Wharton County, TX

Our last event of 2021!

Join MACRI for a virtual conversation about the history of LULAC's Little Schools of the 400 and recent efforts in Wharton County, Texas to preserve one of the last standing Little Schools.

In 1957, Felix Tijerina and the League of United Latin American Citizens launched the first Little School of the 400 to teach Mexican American preschoolers 400 English words before they started elementary school. This program expanded to nine schools the following year and is credited with improving educational outcomes for Mexican American students as well as serving as the model for what would become Project Head Start.

Featuring:

  • Joey Cárdenas, Former Texas LULAC State Director
  • David Vela, Former Acting Director of the National Park Service
  • Pat Blair, Wharton County Historical Commission
  • David Bucek, Wharton County Heritage Partnership
