About the event

⚖️ "The exclusion of otherwise eligible persons from jury service solely because of their ancestry or national origin is discrimination prohibited by the Fourteenth Amendment" - Chief Justice Earl Warren ⚖️

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Hernandez v. Texas (1954) landmark Supreme Court decision, MACRI and MonteVideo present a reception and screening of the documentary film A Class Apart.

Hernandez v. Texas (1954) was argued by lawyers Gus Garcia, Carlos Cadena, John Herrera, and James de Anda—one of the first times Mexican American attorneys tried a case before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decision extended equal protection under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution to Mexican Americans, setting an important precedent for future Mexican American civil rights cases.
